Play Happens- The Game
Here at the Toy Industry Association we’re fortunate enough to experience the magnificence of New York City on a regular basis. Though we never take it for granted ourselves, we sometimes forget that the American International Toy Fair is the only opportunity many of you have to visit the Big Apple. Since your purpose at Toy Fair is business you don’t have much time to plan any after-hours activities and we want you to fall in love with this city like we have!
Last year we introduced Play Happens- a fun little game to help you explore the greatest city in the world- and we are pleased to announce that it will be back for Toy Fair 2012! We have made some improvements, partnered up with some powerful friends including Punch Tab and Facebook and have new fun Toy Fair swag as prizes along your journey. We know that Play Happens every day, every where but we can’t wait for you to play with us this year in advance of and during Toy Fair!

What Is It?
Play Happens is a virtual and social board game that will bridge the online and offline activity of Toy Fair 2012 attendees.
Overview
The purpose of the game is to connect registered attendees at locations throughout New York City using a special web application and the check-in technology of foursquare. We figure, you have to eat anyway, why not create a game out of the experience so you can explore the city a bit. We also added a way to earn points leading up to Toy Fair by participating on our blog.
Who Can Play?
Only qualified registrants of Toy Fair, with a smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, Droid) are eligible to join the game. If you are not currently registered as an attendee, exhibitor or media and would like to play, you must be qualified and register to attend by 11:59pm on Wednesday, February 8th.

How To Play and Win
The game has officially begun but don’t worry. There are so many ways to earn points and get started that you can jump in at any time. We know the majority of the game activity will take place during Toy Fair but you can also earn points and get a head start by reading our blog and participating in various activities right now. You can like us on facebook and earn points. You can submit a comment on the blog and earn points. You can answer a survey or join us for any number of extra fun projects and earn points for your Play Happens account.
The good news is that as you earn points you become eligible for all kinds of Toy Fair swag, including hats, mugs, magnets, dinner, a Broadway show, an iPad or maybe even the Grand Prize – A New Year’s Eve Celebration like only New York City can do. There are so many ways to play and so many ways to win that we know you will have the very best time. Keep reading and learn more.
For those of you who want to turn your blog points up a notch and really get in the game here in New York City, the game officially begins at 12:01am on Saturday, February 11, 2012 and runs until 11:59pm on Wednesday, February 15, 2012.
Based on predetermined criteria, there are check-ins all around the city – restaurants, hotels, NYC sights and of course all things related to Toy Fair will earn points when you visit. Each check-in will earn each player points on the virtual game board. Different locations will have different values ranging from 100 to 1000 points. Special events such as TOTY will earn higher points. At the end of Toy Fair the player who has earned the most points will win the Grand Prize but if you want to cash out your points at any time for some of the other prizes be our guest. All participating locations and available points (as well as directions and vendor information) will be provided to all participants.
All prizes, except where noted, and other than the Grand Prize may be redeemed during show hours at the Play Happens Redemption Counter located on Level 1, of the Javits Center.
The winner will be notified by phone and email. An announcement of the winner will be made public via Toy News Tuesday.
The Rules
- You May only check-in at a location once within a 24-hour period
- All hotels included in the official Toy Fair housing list are eligible for points; however, you may only check-in at the hotel where you are staying.
- You may not check-in at multiple locations within 30 minutes of each other. If you check-in at multiple locations within 30 minutes, you will forfeit your points from all check-ins during that time period.
Please note that failure to follow these rules will lead to disqualification and removal from the game.
The Prizes
In order to be eligible for prizes you must earn a certain number of points:

- Play Happens Hat 8,000 points
- Calendar Magnet 8,500 points
- Play Happens Coffee Mug 10,000 points
- Raffle Ticket for 2 Orchestra Tickets to “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” on Broadway, Tuesday February 14, 2012. 7:00pm 15,000 points*
- Raffle Ticket for $100 gift certificate to NYC’s renown restaurant, Nobu 15,000 points**
- Raffle Ticket for iPad2 20,000 points***
At the conclusion of the game, all points that have not been redeemed for other prizes will be tabulated toward the Grand Prize. The player who earns the most points by the conclusion of Toy Fair 2012 will win an amazing celebration to ring in 2013 right in the heart of Times Square. Your prize will include airfare for 2, hotel accommodations at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, 2 tickets to the Marriott’s exclusive gala and special ball-drop viewing. Our Play Happens winner will be in the center of the action as the world watches the greatest party of the entire year.
*players interested in the “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” Broadway show raffle must cash in their points by 1:00pm on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 in order to be entered to win the tickets. The raffle will be drawn at 3:00pm and the winner will be notified via email no later than 3:30pm. The performance begins promptly at 7:00pm
**players interested in the Nobu gift certificate raffle must cash in their points by Monday, February 13, 2012 at 1:00pm in order to be entered to win. The raffle will be drawn on Monday afternoon at 3:00pm and the winner will be notified via email no later than 3:30pm.
***players interested in the iPad2 raffle must cash in their points by Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 1:00pm in order to be eligible to win. The raffle will be drawn on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the close of the show. The winner will be notified via email and the iPad will be shipped after the show.
Grand Prize Tie-Breaker
If there is a tie, Toy Fair show management will randomly choose a winner from those game players who have the same score. The method of selection will be picking the name out of a hat.
